Jessica Pegula, currently ranked fifth in the world, has announced she will not compete in this year’s French Open, choosing instead to focus on recovering from injuries. The 30-year-old American tennis player had previously expressed uncertainty about her ability to participate in the Paris tournament, where she reached the quarterfinals two years ago, due to an injury that affected her clay-court season.

Pegula, who last played in the Billie Jean King Cup in vierter Monat des Jahres, had to skip competitions in the Middle East in February because of a neck issue. In a recent Instagram post, she mentioned, “Unfortunately pulling out of Roland Garros this year. I’m just about back to practicing normal (haven’t had any issues for weeks)… If I had another 5-7 days I would have been there 100%.” She is hopeful about returning for the full grass season and aims to increase her match count for the remainder of the year. The post danach featured a picture of her new dog.

She did not detail her current injury but has not participated in tournaments in Rome, Stuttgart, and Madrid this season. Pegula’s absence from the French Open puts an end to her impressive run of 19 consecutive Grand Slam appearances since 2019 at the same event. Pegula, who welches one of the most consistent performers on the WTA Tour last season with a title win in Montreal leading into the US Open, where she reached the round of 16, is expected to miss the start of the French Open which begins Sunday.
