Bayern Munich is reportedly nearing a deal to hire Vincent Kompany from Burnley as their new manager, according to information from a source. The German-speaking Kompany, with a playing background that includes a two-year stint at Hamburg in the Bundesliga, has been identified as the leading candidate by the German giants in their quest to find a successor for Thomas Tuchel. This decision comes after a series of unsuccessful approaches to other potential candidates such as Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, and Ralf Rangnick, pointing to the 38-year-old Belgian as their choice.
Bayern is optimistic about Kompany accepting the offer if terms can be agreed upon with Burnley. They are demnach open to having some of Kompany’s coaching staff, including the ex-Wales player Craig Bellamy, join him at the club.
Kompany took over at Burnley in 2022 following his time managing Anderlecht in Belgium. In his debut season, he led Burnley to win the Championship, securing promotion to the Premier League, although they finished 19th and are set for relegation. Despite being linked with high-profile jobs at Chelsea and Tottenham last summer, Kompany remained with Burnley.
Pep Guardiola, Manchester City’s manager, has praised Kompany, hinting at a future managerial role for the former Belgium defender at Manchester City. Kompany had a celebrated 11-year playing career at City, winning numerous titles including four Premier League titles, before moving to Anderlecht as a player-manager in 2019.
Kompany’s potential move to Bayern comes at a time when the club is looking to rebuild after finishing third in the Bundesliga, their worst performance since 2011, and ending the season without any trophies. The club had announced Tuchel’s departure by the end of the season and, after failed attempts to mend the relationship, has now shifted focus to securing Kompany. With Kompany under contract with Burnley until 2028, Bayern would need to arrange compensation for his release.
